There are lots of different typing systems out there, but as I explain in this post, I use and teach The Personalities more than anything else because it’s SO easy to understand and use QUICKLY.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t have hours and weeks and years to learn a personality typing system well enough to apply it to my relationships, my work, or my life in general. (That’s one of the big issues I run into with the MBTI, among other things, even though I’m certified in and use the MBTI, as well. It’s too complicated to really understand without going and getting certified or studying it intensely.) As a busy wife, mom, friend, and professional career coach, I need something I can access and put to use FAST — and I’m willing to bet you’re right there with me!
That said, if you don’t yet understand the basics of The Personalities, be sure to check out this post, then hop back over to here. I’ll be here when you come back. 🙂

The Popular Sanguine WAHM Personality
The Sanguine mom running a WAHM business has a never-ending supply of energy, creative ideas, and enthusiasm. We often joke that Sanguines are the Energizer Bunnies of the personality world. They just keep going and going and going! Each bump in the road only serves to spark a new idea to help them grow their business and inspires their big-picture thinking. They’re optimistic and enthusiastic about their ventures, especially as they incorporate new friends into their business.
Potential Pitfalls for the Sanguine WAHM
Just like all The Personalities, the Sanguine strengths can become weaknesses when carried to extremes. Let’s take a look at a few of the potential pitfalls and how you can overcome them.
Sanguines can be easily distracted.
The term “shiny object syndrome” was created for the Sanguine. Their endless supply of ideas can turn into a flighty, scattered jumping from task to task and project to project, which leads to a lack of follow-through on the things they start.
Sanguines can get bogged down in the details.
Because Sanguines are naturally big-picture thinkers, they can become overwhelmed — and frankly bored — with all the mundane, routine, and detailed aspects of running a WAHM business. When that happens, they can lose their enthusiasm for the project and might give up entirely, regardless of their success in other areas of the business.
Sanguine WAHM Tip #1: Find a Melancholy business buddy!
Much like a strong marriage, you each can fill in for the other’s weakness. You provide the enthusiasm & big-picture thinking, and a Melancholy business partner will provide the structure & follow-through. Also, since both types tend to be creative souls, you’ll both bring different aspects of creativity to keep the business fresh and moving forward.
Sanguine Tip #2: Join an in-person or online WAHM mastermind group.
Sanguines are FABULOUS at networking, so find a group of like-minded mamas who can help you stay on track and finish what you start. You’ll be so excited to show off your progress to your new friends that you’ll be more motivated to stick to it and have a better shot at finishing projects!I'm a Popular Sanguine Work-at-Home Mom! The Perfect Melancholy WAHM Personality
In stark contrast to the bubbly Sanguine, the Melancholy WAHM is detail-oriented and thorough in everything she does. She excels at developing systems and schedules to meet deadlines.
The one area where the Melancholy and Sanguine WAHMs are similar is in their exceptional creativity. Where the Sanguine WAHM is constantly coming up with new, fun ideas, the Melancholy WAHM is plumbing the depths of creativity in search of purpose, meaning, and substance.
Potential Pitfalls for the Melancholy WAHM
As a Melancholy WAHM myself, I speak from experience on these strengths-carried-to-extremes that have become weaknesses for me. If you’re a Melancholy, I’ll bet you can relate!
Melancholies often won’t let anyone help for fear it won’t be “perfect.”
Melancholy WAHMs take the DIY trend to new depths. They are so determined to do everything themselves, that they will often turn down offers of help for fear the other person won’t do it the way they would do it.
Being so focused on all the details being perfect can leave the Melancholy overwhelmed with work, drowning in deadlines, and unsupported when they really need it most. This pitfall can also leave Melancholies stuck in the details, paralyzed in their pursuit of perfection, and unable to publish or post their new product for sale. No finished product means no ability to move their business forward.
Melancholies’ lack of a broad social network can inhibit their ability to succeed.
Especially if a Melancholy is living in her weaknesses, she isn’t likely to have the broad social network needed to get most WAHM businesses to succeed. Especially in freelancing, network marketing, and even blogging, having an army of promoters ready and willing to help you get the word out about your new product or venture is crucial. Melancholies don’t tend to need a lot of people — just a few close friends and confidants. But running a WAHM business really demands the Melancholy adjust her perspective on community and strive to build one.
Melancholy WAHM Tip #1: Find a Sanguine business buddy.
Seek out a Sanguine WAHM who can help you break away from needing it to be perfect and encourage you that what you’ve done thus far is OUTSTANDING! Bonus if you can find a super competent partner who can take over some of the tasks you don’t love but still want to be done RIGHT. (Don’t forget, that Sanguine business buddy needs YOU, too, so cheer her on in return!)
Melancholy Tip #2: Give yourself deadlines and get accountability.
Melancholies are fabulous at setting deadlines and are usually pretty good at meeting them. However, when we’re our own boss, it’s easy to push off deadlines in order to make our project or product “just a little bit better.” At some point, good enough has to be good enough!
To prevent yourself from becoming paralyzed by perfection, ask your business buddy to hold you accountable for completing your big tasks by the deadlines you set. When you reach the deadline, the project HAS to be done. Finish it, launch it, and move on. (You can always go back and make tweaks later — I know you’re going to anyway! 😜)I'm a Perfect Melancholy Work-at-Home Mom! What is *your* WAHM personality? Find out here: Click To Tweet
The Powerful Choleric WAHM Personality
The strengths of the Choleric WAHM demonstrate why Cholerics, in general, tend to succeed in leadership positions — even and especially if it’s their own business! They have incredible vision and long/range planning skills combined with an innate drive to accomplish and the ability to be more productive than any other Personality.
Bottom line? Choleric WAHMs will imagine the possibilities, map out the strategy to get there, and get ‘er done!
Potential Pitfalls for the Choleric WAHM
Like other WAHM types, the awesome strengths of the Choleric WAHM can be carried to extremes and become pitfalls that can trip up her success. (Ask me how I know about some of these issues… 🤦🏻♀️)
Cholerics often stick to the original plan even when it’s not working
Cholerics have the gift of being able to make swift decisions on very little information — and often, they’re right! However, that doesn’t mean they’re ALWAYS right.
When the Choleric WAHMs plans for her business go awry, fessing up to her mistake and making a new plan is harder to do than one would expect. Cholerics HATE being wrong — and they hate admitting it even more… even to themselves. So, they will keep trucking along the original path come hell or high water.
Cholerics can easily become hyper-focused on work to the detriment of everything else.
Because Cholerics are so incredibly productivity-driven, it is very easy for them to fall into the trap of being so laser-focused on work that they ignore everything and everyone else. Laundry will pile up, meals become whatever can be scarfed down quickly, and the kids will fend for themselves or watch Netflix until Mom manages to finish whatever project she’s working on. (And heaven help those babies if they try to interrupt her train of thought!)
Choleric WAHM Tip #1: Find a trusted WAHM friend who will speak truth to you.
When you’re stuck in a plan that isn’t moving your business forward, having a trusted friend who really GETS the WAHM struggles can be a lifesaver. She will be able to remind you of your goals, honestly assess the pieces of your business that are holding you back, and make suggestions for improvements. The key here is to make sure this “biz buddy” is someone from whom you can take constructive criticism. She MUST be someone you respect and are truly willing to listen to.
Choleric WAHM Tip #2: Schedule your mom time vs work time.
Creating and sticking to a plan for how to prioritize your time as a WAHM is critical for Cholerics. Set alarms if you need to and stop working when the time is up. (Try the Pomodoro technique or time blocking!) Once you’ve set these boundaries around your time, commit to keeping them! It’s SUPER easy to ignore that timer when you’re “in the zone,” but the more you practice obeying boundaries and living within the limits you’ve built for yourself, the easier it will become!
(If you haven’t heard of time blocking yet, it’s a LIFESAVER for the work-at-home mom! Check out Jordan Page’s video to learn more about what it is and why it might be FANTASTIC for YOU!)I'm a Powerful Choleric Work-at-Home Mom! What is *your* WAHM personality? Find out here: Click To Tweet
The Peaceful Phlegmatic WAHM Personality
Just as the Sanguine and Melancholy WAHMs are exact opposites, so are the Choleric and Phlegmatic WAHMs. Where Cholerics are goal- and productivity-driven, Phlegmatics are driven to build a WAHM business because of a deep desire to help others. If they believe strongly enough in what they’re doing, that desire to serve others will carry them through even when the road gets rocky.
Where the Choleric WAHM will rigidly stick to her plans, the Phlegmatic WAHM is able to easily adapt and be flexible with her plans. She can easily switch things up as new information becomes available, as her goals change, or when the kiddos come down with the flu and need her undivided attention for several days in a row.
Potential Pitfalls for the Phlegmatic WAHM
These peace-loving, easy-going mamas are just as prone as the rest of us to let their strengths become weaknesses. Here are a couple of areas to watch out for:
Phlegmatics can easily burn out if their business doesn’t focus on the one thing they are truly passionate about.
While other WAHM Personalities may have multiple interests or different facets of their business, the Phlegmatic WAHM tends to have only ONE main passion. If her business isn’t focused on that ONE thing, it will quickly become disposable and not worth the time and energy it takes away from her family.
Phlegmatics can get overwhelmed with long to-do lists or complex projects.
Because Phlegmatics thrive on simplicity, it’s easy for them to get overwhelmed with an ever-growing to-do list — even to the point of becoming paralyzed and not getting anything done.
Phlegmatic WAHM Tip #1: Find your passion area & focus solely on that!
It is absolutely CRITICAL that the Phlegmatic WAHM discovers her ONE passion area. Don’t waste time building a business you are not 100% in love with. And no matter who tells you otherwise or how great the opportunity seems, stick to what you LOVE. It’s not worth it to expand into areas you aren’t passionate about.
Phlegmatic Tip #2: Break large projects into smaller steps.
You may want to enlist the help of a Biz Buddy to help you break down big projects into more manageable, smaller tasks that can move you forward baby step by baby step. Plan to only focus on 1-3 small tasks per day, so you don’t become overwhelmed with the hugeness of the bigger picture. You are the tortoise who will win the race by focusing on one small step at a time!I'm a Peaceful Phlegmatic Work-at-Home Mom! What is *your* WAHM personality? Find out here: Click To Tweet
