Are you struggling to get your WAHM Business off the ground? Getting easily distracted? Waffling on those key business decisions? Chances are you’re being double-minded! Not sure what that means? Keep reading to learn how being double-minded will destroy your WAHM Business — and what God says to do about the problem!
One Sunday morning, just a few weeks ago, I was sitting in our church’s worship service, trying to keep Mini-Me paying attention and engaged in what was going on, when suddenly a verse I had been studying all week jumped out at me as if the sound guy had suddenly cranked the pastor’s mic up to full volume:
“He is a double-minded man, UNSTABLE in all he does.”
~ James 1:8 ~
In ALL he (or she) does.
Not just in her faith life.
Not just in her marriage.
Not just in her relationships with her kids.
And if we’re trying to build a business of any variety, but particularly online, we are typically striving for STABILITY. Being unstable in our WAHM businesses is a recipe for failure – one most of us definitely cannot afford!
If being double-minded goes hand-in-hand with being unstable, then we want to be striving for single-mindedness in how we build our WAHM businesses! In fact, I would go so far as to say that we will never have a business that God can bless if we aren’t laser-focused on the calling He has given us.
This lesson changed EVERYTHING for me!
I went from feeling so completely scattered and drowning in my to-do list to energized and focused almost overnight! It’s amazing to me how God can speak to us about EVERY area of our lives through His Word. I mean, who would have thought I would have such a BUSINESS breakthrough while listening to a random Sunday sermon??
But, when God decides we’re ready to learn a lesson, He will use every avenue we leave open to Him!
Now, don’t get me wrong, there are still days I struggle with the temptation to be double-minded in my business. But, remembering the call God has placed on my life — and how He wants me to single-minded, STABLE, so He can bless that call — has dramatically changed the way I operate in my day-to-day business efforts. So much so, that I couldn’t wait to tell you about it, so you can make a similar shift!
If you’re still with me, I’m guessing you’re ready to hear this message, as well, so let’s dive in!
How Being Double-Minded Will Destroy Your WAHM Business
When we’re working to build a business from home, distractions abound.
Our kids need something the moment we manage to sit down at the computer.
The dryer chimes in the middle of your biggest project of the week, and if you don’t go deal with it NOW, your husband’s work shirts will be irreparably wrinkled — and you do NOT have time to drag out the ironing board tonight!
Your phone is constantly ringing and “notifying.”
The doorbell is buzzing to announce the arrival of your latest Amazon order.
There is only so much we can do to minimize THOSE distractions. So, we certainly don’t want to add insult to injury with even MORE distractions WITHIN our business!
Wait, wait, wait!

Now, back to the WAHM business at hand… 😜
Here’s where we get into trouble by being “double-minded” in our WAHM businesses:
Being Double-Minded Distracts from Your Purpose
The Bible is abundantly clear that we can’t serve two masters (Matthew 6:24). If God has given us a business idea and called us to put it into action and we let anything else distract us from that purpose, we walk straight into sin and idolatry.
That “other” idea that seems like a quicker way to build a business — if it isn’t exactly lined up with your calling and purpose — might, in fact, become an idol, something you pursue MORE than you pursue the idea God gave you to start with.
I’m bad about this one.
Because Scattered Woman encompasses several different topics, I’m constantly splitting my time and energy between the different sides. However, for this season, God has clearly called me to focus on ONE aspect of serving the Scattered Woman Crew: helping mamas go back to work — either in the corporate or WAHM worlds, whichever is right for THEM.
I COULD be focusing on helping moms with natural living solutions. But, that isn’t where God is calling me right now.
I COULD be expanding my Personality Trainer services to include more speaking engagements. But, that’s not my purpose in this season.
When God calls us, we HAVE to stay laser-focused and pursue THAT purpose above all else.
Please hear that I’m talking about your time and energy in your business. If your kids get sick and need you, that’s not a distraction. That’s your call right now as a mom! If your husband needs more of your time and attention, that’s your call as a wife. We’re JUST talking about how we spend those few precious minutes we find in the “mom cracks of our day,” as my business coach puts it, to work on our businesses! When you only have a few precious minutes a day to build your WAHM business, you cannot afford to be distracted! Being Double-Minded Destroys Your Focus
Distraction is the enemy of productivity. In the blogging world, we call it “shiny object syndrome.” Every new idea that pops into our head deserves our time and attention — when in reality, it only serves to divide our attention and prevent progress.
Being Double-Minded Divides Your Efforts
Being double-minded, dividing our focus between our God-given call and that “other” thing that sounds so promising, makes it take much longer to see progress and accomplish our goals.
Remember that whole not serving two masters thing? There is just no way to serve both masters well. We can’t pursue God’s plan for our business AND some other plan. He needs our undivided efforts!
Being Double-Minded Wastes Your Time
When we combine the facts that being double-minded destroys our focus AND divides our efforts, what we’re left with is a lot of wasted time.
Productivity is dependent on single-minded focus.
Have you heard the research that’s become popular over the past few years about the costs of multi-tasking and task-switching? Essentially, multi-tasking causes us to waste time by making our brains constantly switch between tasks and re-start a new mental activity, which means we’re up to 40% LESS productive when we’re task-switching than when we simply do one thing at a time.
And honestly, when you’re building a business at home as a busy mom, who has time to waste??Multi-tasking causes us to waste time by making our brains constantly switch between tasks, which means we’re up to 40% LESS productive when we’re task-switching than when we simply do one thing at a time. Being Double-Minded Depletes Your Energy
Not only does multitasking cause you to waste precious time, it also depletes your energy levels much quicker than if you were focused on only one thing at a time. We get tired more quickly, feel less productive (because we ARE!), and get burnt out faster because we aren’t seeing the results we want in our business.
The Small Business Bureau now states that 56% of business fail within the first five years — and if I had to guess, I’d say Shiny Object Syndrome and double-mindedness are HUGE reasons for those failures. Task-switching depletes the mental energy that God gives us to pursue that ONE goal God has given us!
The Consequences of Double-Mindedness
Double-mindedness has a host of natural consequences — like those we outlined above. But, there is also a spiritual consequence for allowing distraction from our God-given calling.
Let’s review that verse from James…
“Do not think you will receive anything from God, for he is like a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.”
~ James 1:8 ~
This section about the double-minded, unstable man, is actually referring to a man who doubts what God says. God can’t bless doubt. He WANTS to bless our efforts to fulfill His calling on our lives, but He won’t bless what is LESS than His best for us!
Let’s check out the few verses leading up to James 1:8,
“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.”
~ James 1:5-8 ~
If we want God to bless our efforts in our WAHM businesses, we ask Him for wisdom. He WILL tell us what we need to do!
But, we can’t DOUBT His calling or direction. Doubt leads to DISTRACTION & double-mindedness, which we’ve already discovered is bad news, and God will not bless any of it!
When we fully believe that this business is what God is calling us to do, we are laser-focused. It’s only when doubt creeps in that we start wavering in our purpose and getting distracted by other things that God “might” be leading you to do.
Wait, What? This Is About DOUBT??
Yep, it is. Harsh news, I know! I hadn’t connected my distraction to doubt, either, but now I can see it SO plainly! No matter what we THINK is the root cause of our double-mindedness, it all comes back to doubt.
We doubt that this particular business model will actually work for us, so we go off and explore other options.
We doubt that we have what it takes, so we procrastinate and look for a new idea that *might* work better for us.
We doubt that God will keep His promises and come through for us. We doubt that He will make this business into a viable income-producing venture that will keep our families afloat. So, we look for other opportunities to take matters back into our own hands and make money more quickly.
And you know what? Some of those new ideas might be good ones! But that doesn’t mean they’re good for you right now. Don’t let something GOOD distract you from the BEST God has for you! Some ideas might be good ones! But that doesn’t mean they’re good for you right now. We can’t build a business that provides STABILITY for our families without a laser-focus on the end goal. We can’t say we want an online business that brings in $5k/mo, but keep changing the model we use or the product we want to sell.
We can’t be double-minded.
We have to choose ONE thing to focus on, ONE business to pursue, ONE service to offer our communities. We can always expand later, but to get started, we have to be single-minded in ALL we do. Every task, every day, is focused on moving us forward toward this ONE God-given calling.
