Think your little one is too young to memorize Scripture? Surprise! She’s not! 🎉 Joining us today is my friend, Amie Winningham of Sing, Move, And Memorize to talk about her simple, yet revolutionary board books and coordinating songs that will — you guessed it! — help you sing, move, and memorize God’s Word right into their growing hearts!

“Brown Bear, Brown Bear what do you ____?”

I bet you can fill in the blank. I know I can, and so can each of my children under 6. We love reading these sweet board books again and again, and we easily memorize their text.

Now imagine nestling in with your lovely little one on a cool autumn morning. Perhaps a warm blanket snuggles you both close, and a cup of hot cocoa is nearby. This time the book brings goosebumps…it’s magic. You’re not reading Brown Bear, you’re reading God’s very own words.

Your little one pauses, the pictures are captivating. Real children are doing baby sign language to a Bible verse and your darling is trying to figure out how to mimic their movements. You look at the back cover and realize there’s music written to this verse! Not only is it God’s word in movement, it’s God’s Word in song, too.

Help! I can’t read music!

No problem. You can listen to it with just a scan from your phone. In no time, you and your sweetheart are singing God’s word and moving to it, too. In no time, you have memorized God’s Word and held it in your hands.

Magic.

Encouraging a Lifetime of Love for God’s Word

I think one of the greatest things we can give our children is a love for God and a love for His Word — the best place for them to meet Him for themselves. When we help write His Word on their hearts, we are giving them a gift that will stay with them for a lifetime. Promises of His love will reassure them when they feel lost. Encouragement to persevere when life is hard will carry them through each trial. Whispers of His forgiveness will bring them to their knees when they fall hard.

Our babies need God’s word, and they need it for a lifetime.

It’s just the ‘how’ that seems so challenging. How do we make God’s Word come alive for them? How do we put it in a language they can understand — a heart language — with words they can touch?

Introducing Sing, Move, and Memorize!

I believe three basic elements will help any child memorize God’s Word for not just one day but for all of their days:

Think your little one is too young to memorize Scripture? She's not! Learn how to sing, move, and memorize God's Word right into her heart!

1. Sing!

Ten times out of ten, music will help you remember something for longer. We often have an easier time remembering a favorite hymn or worship song than remembering a Bible verse.

There’s a reason! Neuroscientists have analyzed the brain mechanisms related to memory, finding that words set to music are the easiest to remember.

Want to help your baby memorize scripture? Sing it to them! Make up your own melody to your favorite passage.

I’ve loved singing Philippians 4:8 to my two little boys whenever they’re plotting mischief. “Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right…think about such things.”

Singing God’s word over my babies when I tuck them in at night is another great way to incorporate scripture into the day.

If you DO make up your own Bible verse songs, we’d love to hear them over on our Sing, Move, and Memorize forum!

2. Move!

It’s a no-brainer in my world that children love to move. I discovered early on that the songs with finger-plays or motions are the ones my children ask for again and again. This little light of mine” or “Yes Jesus loves me” are in our top ten requests because they have movements — and movements are magical.

Gestures that accompany speech have been scientifically proven to improve memory. It’s called ‘the enactment effect’. Adding sign language to your Bible verse learning is guaranteed to help you memorize it more quickly and remember for longer! Children literally touch God’s word — and it’s fun!

3. Repeat!

If we want God’s Word to become part of our long-term memory, we must use repetition. As we practice, the brain consolidates and strengthens our neural pathways. Like ‘Brown Bear’, God’s Word in a board book makes the repetition a cinch. Our children will beg to come back to what they enjoy.

Grab that cup of hot cocoa and make the moments with God’s Word the most special ones they have all day. Sing together. Move together. And do it over and over again!

Ready to put these steps into action?

Sing, Move, and Memorize was designed just for this reason. We want to see little ones around the world experience God’s Word in a way that meets them just where they are.

Would YOU like to have these board books for your little ones?

Since we know that printed cardstock books — as I’m currently doing for anyone interested in these books — tend to become a soggy, chewed-up mess when babies love them, getting these books published as sturdy, drool-resistant board books is our BIG goal right now. In fact, we’re meeting with publishers, editors, & literary agents next week to get the ball rolling!

And we need YOUR help!

The publishing industry needs to know that these books are a WIN for them before they’ll agree to publish them. So, let’s FLOOD social media and show the publishing industry that we WANT board books filled with movement and song that will teach our children God’s Word!
